Adapter quickstart
Follow the minimum implementation path for a first launch.
Adapter contract
Build deeper adapter workflows where ChartHero launches from your system and calls partner-implemented endpoints for context, provider linkage, and setup.
ChartHero is an AI clinical documentation platform. Adapters let an approved organization embed ChartHero into its own EHR, care management platform, or internal system. The external system creates launch links into ChartHero and exposes partner endpoints that ChartHero calls to verify context, resolve providers, and stage provider mapping data.
Use the public API when your server calls ChartHero to read ChartHero resources. Use an adapter when ChartHero needs to launch from, verify against, or request context from your system.
The core model: a launch link carries only an opaque launch_state handle that you own — never the patient ChartHero opens. ChartHero opens whatever your launch-context callback returns, not what is in the link. The payload is encrypted and launch_state can carry whatever your adapter needs, but you don't need to put patient data in the link: return encounter context with embedded patient for an encounter or appointment launch, or return top-level patient context when the launch is not tied to an encounter. Internalizing this up front avoids the most common early mistake — stuffing patient data into the URL and expecting ChartHero to open it.
The current adapter contract version is 1.0.
Getting started: after Custom Adapter access is enabled for an organization, an authorized organization admin can create the adapter installation from ChartHero organization settings. New Custom Adapter installations start suspended so setup can happen in pieces. Configure external identifiers, connection settings, credentials, launch, and any provider-linking behavior before activating the installation.
| If you are building | Start with |
|---|---|
| A server that fetches ChartHero encounters, documents, transcripts, audio links, or actors | Public API guides and API Reference |
| A launch from your system into ChartHero | Adapter Quickstart, Launch Flow, Launch Links, and Launch Context |
| Provider or user mapping between ChartHero and your source system | Subject Linkage and Provider Linking |
| A partner endpoint ChartHero calls | Adapter Reference |
Start with the smallest path that matches your adapter workflow. Add conditional endpoints, settings, and response fields only when the launch model, provider-linking mode, or onboarding plan requires them.
| Adapter path | Required pieces | Conditional pieces | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patient launch only | POST , encrypted launch link with launch_state, POST returning structured patient identifiers |
Patient demographics and setup defaults | Adapter Quickstart and Launch Links |
| Encounter launch | Patient-launch pieces plus adapter-owned launch_state that resolves to an encounter and a launch-context response with structured encounter identifiers |
Encounter participants, scheduled time, and setup defaults | Launch Flow and Launch Context |
| Actor-gated launch | Patient or encounter launch plus provider-linking mode and top-level encrypted-launch actor evidence | Provider directory or verified-email lookup/repair, depending on onboarding plan | Subject Linkage and Provider Linking |
| Provider mapping | provider_directory capability and POST |
Verified-email lookup when explicitly approved | Provider Linking |
| Checklist recommendations | Patient or encounter launch plus checklist_recommendations capability and POST |
Provider-linking mode when your authorization model requires mapped actors | Checklist Recommendations |
| Verified-email lookup | user_lookup_by_email capability, provider_linking.auto_link_by_verified_email setting when repair is approved, and POST |
Auto-linking policy approved during onboarding | Provider Linking and Adapter Reference |
Implementation labels:
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Required for setup | Needed for adapter setup validation before launch behavior is enabled |
| Required for first launch | Needed for the smallest patient or encounter launch |
| Conditional | Needed only when the configured capability, provider-linking mode, or workflow uses it |
| Optional approved flow | Available only when ChartHero explicitly approves it for the installation |
| Generated reference | Exact request and response schema lives in the Adapter Reference |
The Adapter Quickstart is the canonical, ordered build sequence — connection setup, launch configuration, the launch round trip, errors, and conformance testing. Start there once you have picked your adapter path above, and use Launch Flow for the launch loop itself.
Each adapter installation has one configured base URL. Standard routes are relative to that URL.
https://ehr.example.com/integrations/charthero
| Route | Purpose |
|---|---|
POST |
Non-PHI connectivity health check |
POST |
Verify and hydrate launch context |
POST |
Return provider directory rows for mapping |
POST |
Return partner-recommended encounter checklist items |
POST |
Optional verified-email provider-linking helper |
The first public adapter docs publish launch, provider-linking, and checklist-recommendations surfaces. They do not publish scheduling, broad import, clinical data import, appointment search, or write-back contracts. Those capabilities are expected to grow later under the adapter family; until each ships, ChartHero withholds it from the published contract so partners do not design around an unavailable surface.
Your domain terms map onto ChartHero resources and external identifier subjects as
follows. The source and type strings are the exact values configured for the
organization; the examples below are common labels, not required enums.
| Your term | ChartHero resource | How you express it |
|---|---|---|
| Patient | Patient subject | patient.external_ids[], for example type: patient_id or type: mrn |
| Appointment or visit | Encounter | encounter.external_ids[], for example type: appointment_id |
| Provider or clinician | Provider actor | provider.external_ids[]; the published v1 provider helper contract uses type: provider_id |
| The user opening the link | Actor (a ChartHero user) | actor in the encrypted launch payload and the callback |
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Adapter | Partner-implemented endpoints ChartHero calls when launching from or verifying against an external system |
| Public API | ChartHero-hosted REST API your server calls to read ChartHero resources |
| Adapter base URL | Environment-specific root URL where ChartHero sends adapter requests |
| Capability | Boolean installation setting that enables an adapter surface such as launch context or provider directory |
| Launch alias | Environment-specific path segment in the ChartHero browser launch URL |
| Launch keyset | Symmetric key material used to encrypt launch ctx payloads for ChartHero |
| Authorization header value | Value ChartHero sends verbatim as the Authorization header when calling adapter endpoints |
| Launch context | Adapter endpoint response that resolves launch_state and returns the patient-bearing context ChartHero should open |
| Encounter | A ChartHero clinical encounter. Your system's appointment maps to a ChartHero encounter, returned from the launch-context callback with the configured encounter identifier source and type |
| Subject | A patient, encounter, or provider that ChartHero links by exact external identifier |
| Subject linkage | Exact identifier matching for patients, appointments, providers, and external users |
| Provider linking | ChartHero user-to-upstream-provider mapping policy for user-scoped launches and partner calls |
| Setup defaults | Optional launch-context response fields that preselect ChartHero workflow setup such as mode, template, or phone-call target |
The adapter contract reference is generated from a separate OpenAPI artifact:
/openapi/organization-adapters/v1/openapi.json
The generated reference describes endpoints your system implements. It is separate from the ChartHero public API reference, which describes endpoints your system calls.
The contract artifact path (organization-adapters) and the launch JWE header typ (charthero-org-integration-launch+jwe) carry an org/organization prefix. These are stable contract identifiers — use them exactly as shown. They refer to this same adapter contract.
